A Smart-Home Intelligent Life-Defense System: multi-zone gas/flame/water/motion sensing, camera person-detection, and a real-time mobile app — awarded Best Project.
Overview
SHIELDS — a Smart-Home Intelligent Life-Defense System — is a Raspberry Pi 5 platform that watches a home for danger and responds automatically. Multi-zone gas, flame, water, and motion sensors trigger servo-controlled windows and a faucet, with keypad / OTP / RFID access control on the doors.
On top of the hardware, I deployed live YOLOv8n person detection on an MJPEG camera stream and built the full software stack — a Flask REST API, a web dashboard, and an Expo React Native app with real-time push notifications. It won Best Project in the Embedded Systems & Programming course.
What I built
Embedded platform
Integrated multi-zone sensors, servo actuators, and keypad/OTP/RFID access control on a Raspberry Pi 5.
Live person detection
Deployed YOLOv8n on a live MJPEG stream, exposed through a Flask REST API.
Cross-platform app
Built an Expo React Native app (live dashboard, camera feed, alert history, access control) with Zustand state, AsyncStorage, and Expo push notifications.
